The school nurse acts as a liaison between home, school, healthcare providers and the health care community agencies to assist students and their families with health issues or concerns. The school nurse provides first aid for students and staff, health consultation for students, parents, and staff, as well as state-mandated health screenings and assessments.
Canton Local employs two school nurses. They are Renae Synder and Lori Serafini. Renae Snyder has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and has been employed for 13 years with Canton Local. Lori has a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Ohio State and had been employed at Canton Local for 12 years.
Our nurses conduct yearly health screenings for students in various grades. Screenings consist of vision, hearing, scoliosis and BMI measurement. We also promote health and wellness by teaching lessons on hand hygiene, dental health, safety and growth, and development. Renae and Lori audit all immunization records and maintain emergency medical information for staff and students, as well as oversee all medication administration for students. Our nurses also began the Girls on the Run international program in Canton Local, which will enter its fourth year this spring. Renae and Lori strive to keep the best interest of each Canton Local student at heart while maintaining a healthy school environment. Both nurses have four children of their own and can appreciate the challenges that many families face while raising kids today.
